Joanna has just moved to Paris to study fine art. At Musée d’Orsay, she sketches “The Desperate Man” by Gustave Courbet and befriends an artist called Gus, who looks just like the portrait; and yet she cannot find the painting in the museum again. Meanwhile, in the 19th century, Gustave Courbet looks for inspiration from young women. Joanna’s friend Bea hasn’t met Gus and isn’t quite sure if he actually exists, even though in the 19th century, she is one of Courbet’s muses. When Joanna models for Gus, he paints a scandalous portrait called “The Origin of the World,” which is the same painting a 19th century muse, Joanna Hifferman, modeled for. When Bea becomes close to a museum guard, Henri, he shows her the most famous Courbet painting in d’Orsay, “l’Origine du Monde” (“The Origin of the World.”) Joanna comes back to d’Orsay and Henri shows her the same painting and tells her about its model, Joanna Hifferman, to whom Joanna feels a strange kinship.
